Issued: 0530hrs Sunday 25th March 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Quiet weather north-central Europe

Sunday
Low pressure across the central Mediterranean brings unsettled weather to southern Italy, Greece and the southern Balkans. Heavy rain and brisk winds, local gales. Northern Italy is drier. The Alps also mainly dry. Areas of showers affect central-southern France and also Spain, snow on the mountains. Portugal is generally dry, highs of 16C in the south. Barely 10C on the Biscay coast with a northerly wind.
Quiet weather extends across the Low Countries, Germany and eastern Europe, with variable cloud and some sunshine, highs 9 to 13C. Cooler around the Black Sea. A zone of patchy snow affects central Norway and Sweden, also southern Finland, but amounts generally small. Showery for western Norway. A few brief showers for Denmark and also the Baltic states.

Monday
A drier day for most of Spain, as high pressure builds from the west across Iberia. Warmest temperatures in southern Portugal, up to 19C. Locally warm too in the south-east of Spain. Showers affect southern France and the Pyrenees. Low pressure remains centred over southern Italy, producing slow-moving thundery showers. Clusters of showers spread across the Balkans toward the Black Sea. Snow in the mountains of Romania.
A weak front across northern-central Europe produces a fair amount of cloud, and local spots of rain, but amounting to very little for most places. High pressure builds across Scandinavia, and cold northerly winds sweep across the Baltic. Patchy snow or rain for southern Norway and Sweden. Snow showers for the far north.
