Heavy snow for Alps

Issued: 0530hrs Wednesday 3rd January 2018
Duty forecaster: Garry Nicholson

Dry southern Spain & Portugal; some thundery rain Greece

Wednesday
A powerful area of low pressure sweeps eastwards across northern Europe, bringing severe gales to the Low Countries and Germany. A spell of heavy rain advances east into Poland and the Czech Republic, followed by clusters of heavy showers. Southern Scandinavia also sees rain, whilst snow is likely on the northern edge of this system for central Sweden. The far north stays dry and cold.
Another heavy fall of snow for the Alps as fronts extend into central Europe. Showery and windy for France, also northern Spain. Dry and warm for southern Spain and Portugal. Dry but breezy for the western Mediterranean. Low pressure over Greece brings areas of thundery rain, focused mainly over the Aegean Sea and into Turkey, also Cyprus. Mainly dry across the Balkans, Romania and Ukraine, although some patchy rain is possible.

Thursday
Heavy rain affects the north & east of France as further fronts move in from the Atlantic. Heavy snow again for the western Alps. Largely dry across Iberia, with warm sunshine for Portugal and southern Spain. Strong westerly winds for the Mediterranean. Thundery rain for Greece and western Turkey. Generally dry across eastern Europe, although local showers are possible. Some rain for Belgium, and perhaps the Netherlands and south-western Germany, but the north & east of Germany should be dry. Low pressure over southern Scandinavia brings persistent snow to much of central & eastern Sweden, also southern Finland. Easterly winds across Norway should allow western areas to stay dry.
